Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care
For years activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in great green macaw , the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor and plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health
Lolita is gorgeous, but her health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups that would like to see her released back into the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current condition. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is aging quickly and her health is declining.
It is not clear what health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor is not required to share this information. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to move the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Sadly, these plans came too late for the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
